The Albany Bulb Event Series
Alternating Currents – The Albany Bulb Event Series was conceived and designed in spring 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic and resulting severe limiting of safe performance venues for Bay Area artists and audiences.
Our next event, "HEAR | TOGETHER," is a collaboration with Music Bay Area, Contemporaneous, Crowden and the Ross McKee Foundation on Sunday Monday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will take place offsite at the Crowden School in Berkeley.
Alternating Currents celebrates both the rich and diverse creativity of Bay Area artists and musicians working in all media and genres and the extraordinary beauty and uniqueness of the Albany Bulb. Alternating Currents is directed by Debra Pughe and Jon Winet, and is a project of the community-arts organization Love the Bulb.
Alternating Currents' most recent event was "Remnants & Rudiments," on Saturday, April 3. The performance featured poet Maw Shein Win and musicians Dan Plonsey and Thomas Scandura.
The poetry was written during the pandemic reflecting on the fractured nature of thoughts and random revelations during lockdown. The music is a mixture of composition and improvisation based on the 13 Essential Drum Rudiments.
In 2020 we presented two events - “Spinet Farewell”featuring Sarah Cahill - and “11 11 Caution 20 20 Veterans Day,” an Intermedia project by musician Dan Plonsey & artist Randy Hussong
All Alternating Currents shows are free. Due to Covid-19 restrictions and a commitment to ensuring the health and safety of performers and audience members, events are often ticketed and restricted to 50 people or pods.
